With Remote Play, you can control your PlayStation® console remotely wherever you have a high-speed internet connection. Using the PS Remote Play app, you can control your PlayStation®5 console or PlayStation®4 console from a device in a different location.

During E3 2014, Sony announced that its PS Vita TV will be coming to the US, Canada, and Europe. We saw the PS Vita TV back in September of last year, but at the time it was only releasing in Japan, despite its marketing potential. Now, Sony renamed the device to the PlayStation TV — perhaps in order to drop the possible stigma the Vita name has as a second-place brand. Upon release, though, the PlayStation TV will become one of the best set-top media boxes on the market, with apps for many popular streaming services (most likely including Netflix), and the ability to play almost every PS Vita game on your TV or stream PS4 games from your bedroom to your living room TV.
Now that the Vita TV has changed names, the little device will hit the North American market with a confusing history. Sony already made a PlayStation TV a while ago, officially called the PlayStation 3D Display, though obviously colloquially referred to as the PlayStation TV. The new set-top Vita box was originally called the PS Vita TV, but will now just be called the PlayStation TV, which people will confuse with the 3D Display. Regardless of the confusing naming history and lesser-known products, the new PlayStation TV is an impressive little product, and might end up putting the Vita in the homes of gamers who thought they’d never own one in the traditional capacity. That’s because the PlayStation TV is one of the best set-top boxes on the market.

Torturously, we have a PS Vita TV at the office (as well as a 3D Display), but it was essentially rendered useless — not because we can’t read Japanese, but because we couldn’t create a Japanese account to make it work. We were looking forward to the device (before we realized the account might be an issue) because it is not only a set-top media streamer, but throws in the added option of robust games made for a dedicated video game console. Your Roku might have Angry Birds Space, but the PS Vita TV has every Vita game. Jokes of the Vita’s library aside, that’s many, many more decent and robust games than your Chromecast makes available.
Perhaps even better than robust video games, the PlayStation TV employs the same Remote Play features as the Vita, meaning you can, for example, stream a PS4 game from your room upstairs to the PlayStation TV in the living room downstairs. Sure, that feature still has to adhere to the limited bounds of Remote Play, but it’s stronger than ever. For instance, when the PS4 released, we heavily tested NBA 2K14 using Remote Play, and the only difference between the console player and the Vita player — who were playing head-to-head — were the shapes of the controllers and sizes of the screens.
The PlayStation TV will launch this fall in the United States, Canada, and Europe for just $100. Sony will also launch a $140 bundle that includes the PlayStation TV, a PS3 controller, an 8GB memory card, an HDMI cable, and a digital voucher for The Lego Movie Video Game. The PlayStation TV will also be able to use Sony’s PlayStation Now game streaming service, which goes into public beta on July 31 of this year.

To comfortably operate the PS4™ system during remote play, it is recommended that you use a DUALSHOCK™4 wireless controller. The following restrictions apply when using a DUALSHOCK™3 wireless controller.
- You cannot perform operations using the touch pad or touch pad button.
- You cannot use the motion sensor feature.
- The START button functions as the OPTIONS button.
- The SELECT button functions as the SHARE button.
To display the toolbar, press the PS button on the controller.

Select this option to replicate the action of pushing the PS button on the PS4™ system's wireless controller. You can also replicate the action of pressing and holding that PS button for 1 second or more.

- (LiveArea™ Screen)
Select this option to return to the LiveArea™ screen. This option appears only when the player who connected using remote play presses the PS button.
If the remote play connection is about to be cut off, (Connection unstable) is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen.

The toolbar is displayed.

- Select [Enter Rest Mode] or [Turn Off PS4]. The PS4™ system is turned off, and the remote play connection is closed.
